Movement & Performance

Dance Theatre

A performance field combining choreography with dramatic image, character, voice, objects or narrative structure.

At a glance

These ratings describe broad tendencies, not requirements or guarantees. Teaching style, pace and access vary by teacher, level and class format.

History

Dance theatre has multiple lineages, including German Tanztheater and choreographers who challenged boundaries between concert dance and theatre. Contemporary artists use the term broadly for work where movement and theatrical meaning are inseparable.

What to expect

Classes may combine technical movement, improvisation, text, character and composition. The emphasis is often on communicating an idea rather than perfecting one standard vocabulary.

Access and difficulty

Because tasks vary, contact the teacher about floorwork, speech, touch and emotional content. Creative roles can sometimes be adapted even when a particular movement phrase is inaccessible.

Check access, pace and available adaptations with the organiser before booking, especially if you have limited mobility, an injury or specific support needs.
